Talented Ladies of the Art World!

picture-14

Recently whilst trawling the web for creative inspiration I came across this great website show casing the art work of Elizabeth Mcgrath. Her creative style is very magically, surreal, and slightly disturbing. Below is an excerpt from her website;

Los Angeles born self-taught artist Liz McGrath has been plundering
the darker corners of the world from which to elicit her cavalcade of
creatures; in her new works, she exposes the shadow-dwellers to the
full effects of unrelenting sunshine. Inspired, perhaps, by the
pervasive sense of exposure running rampant in the zeitgeist, McGrath
apologetically illuminates that which our frail psyches prefer to keep
in the dark, taking a much-needed closer look at our blind spots”

Surry Hills Festival

What a fun day. We ate, rode the dodgem cars and browsed the creative and innovative stalls. I am an absolute market, festival junkie and this one didn’t let me down. Ok…what did I buy… a cute dress for Liv, two bubble machines and a very cool t-shirt. Why do I love markets so much…? I think it is because there is such a mix of people and cultures with a real diverse range of original things do buy and see. I am always amazed at how creative people are and what inspires others. It keeps me inspired. I think my children love them nearly as much as me, but that could be because of the ice cream they get at the end of the day. Even Mr S gets into the fesitvies, he is convert after many years.

Semi Permanent 2009

SemiP 2009Over the 3rd and 4th of April this yearI was lucky enough to attend the Semi Permanent Design Conference, Sydney. This years line up was a stunning array of some of our industries best and brightest including Melbourne’s XYZ studios and high fashion photographer Daniela Federici.

Some highlights of the event were meeting the well know artist John English and gaining a better insight to his highly publicised political public art.
There was also  an inspirational presentation from Timba Smiths Art Director and  Owner of Wooden Toy Quarterly – This design magazine has a cult following, it pushes the boundaries of type design and magazine layout.

Overall it was a fantastic event bringing together Sydney’s design community to celebrate what inspires us and give us all lots of motivation to bring back to our Surry Hills Studios and channel into our own projects!

Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills

brett-whitley

Another great kickback for working as a designer in Surry Hills is that have just learnt that one of my favourite artists Brett Whiteley has his Studio just around the corner. This is the studio where he lived & worked when he was producing some of his most influencial art works. I find that when I’ve got my nose to the grind stone working on annual reports or other large layout documents, its great to get inspired by more free form art.Whiteley’s use of colour and free brush strokes is a balm for the soul! So whenever you are in the areabe sure to drop in and take a look.To check out the website www.brettwhiteley.org
