Give me some Pepper! Indie Craft and Design

picture-16

Ok, so hopefully you already know to go easy on your electricity and not to waste water or Al Gore will be coming a knocking on your door! But while we are all busy flicking switches and cutting back on the hot water and still looking fabulous it might be time to have a little peak behind the seams…

We’ve all heard of a tiny problem called climate change, you know that thing – global warming – but did you know that our passion for fashion is annually costing about 150, 000 litres of water per average household! Thank goodness the peeps over at Peppermint Magazine have taken this all in their stride with Australia’s first indie, design and fashion mag with a focus on being green. The next installment hits the shelves this week, it is Issue 3 and full of crafty goodness. Lots of beautiful and environmentally aware info and treasures, including a profile on States of Nature.

Take heart guys and gals and get behind this sparkling jewel of the Australian magazine and fashion industry. Have a closer look at their website http://www.peppermintmag.com/

Animation design at its best!

Lauren Gregg not only creates fantastic little illustrations, paintings, drawings and animation. She animates for Kangaroo Alliance, illustrates for the animation band The Buddy System and plays bass. A musician too!

Her huge client list includes Nickelodeon, Disney Television Animation, Target, Yum Pop, MTV and Visa.  No wonder Lauren’s illustrations and animations are so popular they are the perfect mixture of creativity and comedy which makes her designs full of character and originality.

Check out her Nerdimals series, just one of many funny illustrations featured on her website www.laurengregg.com

A graphic slap in the face.

Ames Bros are a graphic design team based in Seattle, creating work that steps out of its medium and really hits you in the face. It’s edgy, colourful and is a continuous narrative of the talent the pair fuses. They have many celebrity clients and though the business has not always been successful over the years they have stuck it out and created a company that continues to produce interesting and unique creative. The big bold designs really inspire me when a client is after something that really wants to grab ones attention.

Inappropriate Design Inspiration.

These stunning antique looking creations let the mind meander & take us back to the days where men wore pin stripped suits on planes & ladies feathered hats on ocean liners, where young men grew tapered moustaches, woman smoked thin cigarettes from ivory holders & everyone had a surprised look on their face.

Nick Dawson’s spectacular illustrations have appeared everywhere from billboards, buses & books to the wall next to a telephone. Born in Scotland & finally settling in California, he spent the good part of two decades everywhere in between & now claims that he can only guarantee one thing: That inspiration will only strike at the most inappropriate of moments. In the mean time he recommends reading, checking out other people’s work & travel. In no particular order of course.

Nick seems to have worked out the recipe for the perfect existence. Now if only the rest of us could produce pieces as divine as his & as often.

Creative Web Design Inspiration!

Seeing as the studio is in the throes of re designing our website, I thought I would write this weeks blog on another great site I have stumbled apon for Aardman Animations. You’d be right to suspect that some of the funkiest and fun sites on the web would belong to animators – masters in the world of pixels! This site belongs to the creators of Wallace and Gromit, its surreal sketches and navigation, and fun animation give a great balance between information and entertainment. If you are a fan of Chicken Run and the Wallace and Gromit characters you will have fun visiting this site. Check it out at www.aardman.com

Another great site launched in August last year features Japan based designer John Boardly, especially if you love typography (what graphic designer doesn’t?!) Lose yourself in his recent entries on serifs, ligatures and descenders at www.ilovetypography.com
