Inspirational Photography

Annie Leibovitz is one of America’s best portrait photographers, who is known for her photographs of today’s celebrities in such magazines as Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair and her in own collection for her show and published books. Her trademark technique involves the use of bold colours, odd poses, fantasy themes and a close collaboration between her and her subject.

Her photographs are very memorable, stunning and sometimes quite controversial. Her subjects have ranged from the most famous of celebrities to Vegas showgirls, Olympians and farmers. Most of which have then gone on to feature on the cover of magazines & in numerous galleries.

Her photographs are inspiring not only because they are beautiful – not matter what the subject but also because they have such meaning and passion behind them. If you get the chance check out her books ‘Photographs: Annie Leibovitz 1970-1990’, Olympic Portraits (1991) and Women (1999) do so, have a look at something that we are quite familiar with currently, the celebrity, but through the lense of the amazing Annie Leibivtiz.

Beautiful Ilustration Design inspires commercial Graphic Design

Im not usually a fan of technically precise illustration and prefer something a little more freeform but the illustrations of  Jen Lobo are beautiful, with an old world storybook charm. A lovely simple website design that lets the work speak for itself, revolving around various themes of nature. Nice to take a break from corporate and commercial graphic design and be inspired by an illustrator with such a precise eye for detail. I would love to use this style for our next invitation and events design project! Take a look for yourself www.jenlobo.com

Miso – Art, not soup

Tiny Ukrainian born artist Miso works on & off the street in Melbourne, her femininity shines through in her mantra which is best explained in her own words.

“It comes down to wanting to share your drawings and artwork with people that otherwise wouldn’t see it. I’d rather give it away instead of selling it and engaging in art as the commodity that it can be”.

“Even though being female is likely to resonate and permeate my work, which is a rather nice idea, I try to make art which isn’t overtly ‘female’, in the way that a lot of other female artists and graffers do. So much of contemporary art is concerned with ‘unsettling notions’ or ‘destroying comforts’ for really superficial and empty reasons, drawings usually end up being young females, though that’s also a really conscious part of my work – in the sense that, like most female street artists, in my own depictions of women, I’m actively changing the way I want them to be seen and worth in graffiti, and by other (male) graffiti artists, both as artists and figures.”

All of her pieces are created using a number of mediums – from paper, pen, watercolour, wood & cans, but she always seems to come back to the old trusty pen & paper. Producing her beautiful pieces that make every person that sees them feel like they are a better person because of it. That is her aim, which she has successfully met. Now all there is to do is sit back & loose yourself.

More Inspirational Web Design

As Ive mentioned in previous blogs Fresco is in the throes of re designing our website, so a lot of time has been spent trawling the web looking for creative inspiration. A good site I have come across recently is the Rice Daubney site. I thought I would explore more commercial design in this blog, and this site for the architectural firm is a good example of creativity married with commercial and corporate restraints. This is a great example of a flash site, it requires a bit of exploration as the navigation works on a number of levels, but makes more sense the more you delve into the site. My only criticism is the restraint in colour, their branding uses a beautiful colour palette which hasn’t been employed at all throughout the site, instead they have chosen a dark, dramatic creative tone… still strong and impactful. Don’t take my word for it take a look for yourself at www.ricedaubney.com.au
