If Napolean Dynamite ever left Idaho & his dancing shoes behind & made a living out of his creative hand – it would have been in the form of these cards. Perhaps he is Able & Game’s long long long lost cousin?
This a stationery label aims to create greeting cards that stand out from the crowd. Much like Napolean himself. Able & Game use humour & real sentiment to convey messages that are quirky, poignant & personal.
The cards feature hand drawn designs with references to pop culture & trends that people easily identify with. The statements made on the cards have people nodding & laughing in agreement & the illustrations are drawn by hand, giving the cards an innocent quality that harks back to the day when you used to draw cards yourself or the last time you watched Napolean Dynamite.
Either way the designs are so cool that you want to buy them all & send them to everyone you know so that they will then think the same about you.
I was lucky enough to go to the Sydney Semi-Permanent design conference last week and it has inspired my first blog entry. My favourite speakers were Frankie Magazine, Tin& Ed, The Glue Society and Jessica Hishe.
Jessica, typographer extraordinaire, showed off her exquisite and inspiring recent work. She has been working on “Daily Drop Cap” which is a project which involves her designing a letter a day until she has completed a hefty 12 alphabets!
What do you get when you add 20 young and established designers playing a visual game Chinese Whispers over skype? Awesomeness, that’s what. The Art of Conversation will exhibit the results of ten designers from London and ten from Berlin, who have been asked to play over the course of 90 days, each being involved in one stage of the chain. Each participant is presented with a work/idea from the previous participant in the chain via a Skype chat. They then have 3 days to interpret it and forward their results to the next participant. Their response can take any form; from sculpture to performance, photograph to text. The exhibition aims to showcase the designers’ talents and efforts as a result of collaboration. Can’t wait for the exhibition – opening 11th May in London.
At the end of this week Im off to Melbourne for a business trip. I love, love, love Melbourne, its so inspiring from a design perspective, not only the graphic design, but fashion, furniture and architecture. Even the hotel Im staying at has that Melbourne cool… Bloomfields. This gem was a tip from my favourite blog, the Design Files. With its rooftop pool, customised individual room design and a funky art deco diner. Take a look for yourself ans stay tuned for my review next week. Gertrude street here I come!
