AGDA Trivia Night

Congratulations are in order for team Creative Method for taking out the pennant in this year’s AGDA Gordon Andrews Scholarship Trivia Night! Thanks to everyone for coming along and making this night a huge success and one of the most fun events on the AGDA calendar.

Well done to James Armstrong from Surveillance for winning the ‘take flight’ competition, once again proving that aeronautical designers do not show up to this event, and congrats to team Interbrand for building the highest structure out of drinking straws in under 5 minutes! But ultimately it was team Creative Method that knew the most about Qantas logos, Pablo Picasso, opera house tiles, barbie dolls, Australian Gladiator and many things in between, winning them a bunch of cool stuff kindly provided by Semi-Permanent, Yaffa Publishing, The Art Gallery of NSW, SABA, Hopscotch Films and a host of other kind contributors.

This was my second year hosting this great night, and I am proud to have been a part of such a worthwhile event supporting a worthy cause:  The Gordon Andrews Scholarship is a $3,000 prize awarded to an AGDA student member undertaking inspirational design research through full time study at a formal tertiary program. Proceeds from the night go to fund the Scholarship.

Special thanks to generous sponsors Aquent, Konica Minolta and Adobe. And a big thank you to the AGDA team, especially Xandro Lombardi and Anita Lyons for their tireless efforts. I look forward to hosting this fabulous event again next year! See you all there!

Joel Dickens Exhibition

Earlier this month Annalisa and I headed down to Arthouse Gallery in Rushcutters Bay to check out our friend Joel’s art exhibition after work. We swanned in and were instantly handed a glass of champers and blown away by vast splashes of colour and dynamic brushstrokes covering large canvasses, not to mention the sheer number of people there!

The exhibition closely followed current affairs and news events; with conflict, themes of wealth, political unrest, the GFC and poverty all featuring conceptually in Joel’s art. His work is abstract and open to different interpretations; we noted some strong avian references (but I’m afraid of birds so that could’ve just been my reading!).

Joel’s work is up there with the greats and would not look out of place in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice. We wish him the best of luck and are very much looking forward to the next installment! If you are in the area, pop into our studio and check out the huge canvas Joel created for us a few years back entitled “i think i ate the blue crayon”.

Designer Afloat! Well, nearly!

Instead of going away over the Christmas break this year, I decided to build a boat in my living room! Nothing like a holiday project to keep the brain going. It was also time to satiate my desire to own a little sailboat! Here are some snaps of the assembly process. I am currently painting it and have named it “The Puffin”!

The boat is a kit sailboat from the friendly folk at The Balmain Boat Company and was designed by Andrew Simpson owner of Vert Design, a Redfern-based object design company. Many thanks to him for all his help and support (even contacting me from The Brindabella at sea halfway between Sydney and Hobart, returning from the great yacht race!). Also to my housemates who helped/played the Xbox quietly nearby and egged me on.
